A couple of days ago I added all the pictures from Paula at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival I could find, and also made screencaps from the Precious trailer. Don’t miss all the new additions here.

It’s very likely many have seen at least one 2009 best picture nominee, or maybe even the winner. And now that Cannes is only a memory, it’s time to shuffle through the possibilities before the onslaught of Venice, Telluride and Toronto speculation.

But it’s Lee Daniels’ Precious that might be the best positioned of all. The film roared out of Sundance with intense acclaim and major awards, only to be met with a slot in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard lineup, and a huge distribution deal with Lionsgate that involves Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey, it should be remembered, was credited with playing a little role in Crash‘s success at the Oscars – a film also released by Lionsgate. At this point, the film’s screenplay and Mo’Nique’s performance seem like givens, but perhaps it could push even further? It’s set for an early November release, following a similar strategy to what Slumdog used last year. It’s bound to be a crowd pleaser, and find some serious love from critics. If it manages to get a best picture nod, it would be the first film in history directed by an African-American to be nominated for best picture. And he’s openly gay to boot. Calling Precious a frontrunner for this kind of success seems extremely premature, but when factoring everything into its future, one can’t help but ponder the possibilities.

It’s finally here and only one word, wow. Paula simply looks amazing as does the rest of this star-studded cast. I’m seriously hoping for some huge nominations in the coming year for this film. The title was changed a couple of months ago – if you didn’t know there was another movie out called Push… I’m thinking this might have been due to confusion on a number of people.

So please, take a moment and just watch.

It was looking a little grim there for the 2009 Sundance award winning film Push who for a couple of weeks now had not acquired a distributor; but now thanks to a wonderful trio the film will be released. As per Variety:

Lionsgate has acquired Sundance Film Festival winner Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire. Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry will team up to help promote the film.

Directed by Lee Daniels from an adapted script by Damien Paul, Push became only the third film in Sundance history to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Awards in the U.S. Dramatic Competition last month. Film stars newcomer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz.

Project reteams Lionsgate and Daniels for the first time since Monster’s Ball.

Push revolves around an overweight, illiterate African-American teen in Harlem who is about to give birth to her second child when she is accepted into an alternative school.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. The moment I saw Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie. The film is so raw and powerful–it split me open,” Winfrey said.

Winfrey and Perry will promote Push through their respective film companies, Harpo Films and 34th Street Films.

Lionsgate prexy of acquisitions and co-productions Jason Constantine announced the deal.

Push was one of the biggest crowd pleasers this year at Sundance, the film earned several wonderful reviews and even picked up some awards at the closing festival! This is fantastic news! There is even heavy acclaim for Mo’Nique (Oscar rumors!), Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carrey and Paula.

This from EW:

The early buzz seemed almost absurd — Mo’Nique, what are you wearing to the Oscars? — but after all was said and done, director Lee Daniels and the cast of Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire emerged from the 2009 Sundance Film Festival victorious. The harrowing film won both the Audience and Grand Jury awards in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, as well as a Special Jury Prize for Mo’Nique’s performance as the unbearably cruel mother to Precious Jones, an obese, illiterate girl struggling to survive growing up in Harlem. “Insanely awesome” is how first-time actress Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) described the culmination to her whirlwind of a festival. “I feel like I live in a bubble. Like this isn’t real. Like this is the land of Oz or something.”

Push works on so many different levels,” said Sundance director Geoffrey Gilmore after the ceremony, held at Park City’s Racquet Club Saturday night. “It has such an emotional power to it, but it’s not just some kind of sentimental bath. You don’t understand that film until you watch the whole thing. You can’t say we’ve seen this before. You haven’t seen this before.”

Paula has taken some Sundance Portraits these past few days for her film Push. Three new sessions have been added to the gallery. She looks so beautiful! Thanks once more to Mariana!

Three new events from Sundance: Filter For Good By Brita, SAG Indie Brunch and 50 Cent Party, have been added. I’ve also replaced tons of previous pictures from the last few days in gorgeous HQ. Thanks to my awesome friend Mariana for her help with those.

Also you may note there is finally a gallery theme. It’s nothing fancy, but atleast it’s not so basic anymore!

Variey has given Push a wonderful review. Here are some excepts:

An urban nightmare with a surfeit of soul, Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire is like a diamond — clear, bright, but oh so hard. To simply call it harrowing or unsparing doesn’t quite cut it; Push is also courageous and uncompromising, a shaken cocktail of debasement and elation, despair and hope. Everyone involved deserves major credit for creating a movie so dangerous, problematic and ultimately elevating. Marketing will be a problem, because the shorthand description is so unpalatable. But this is, for all its scorched-earth emotion, a film to be loved.

Daniels never allows the film, however gothic and nightmarish, to lose its footing in the real world, and that world includes a certain amount of hope: Despite her mother’s hostility, Claireece enrolls in an alternative school where a teacher named Blu Rain (Paula Patton) prepares young women for their GEDs. Patton is terrific, beautiful but carrying the weight of the world in her eyes. And Claireece’s classmates, with their street-smart banter, give the film some needed levity.
