A ferry filled with crewmen from the USS Nimitz and their families was blown up in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. BATF Doug Carlin is brought in to assist in the massive investigation, and gets attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit, one that uses spacefolding technology to directly look back a little over four days into the past. While tracking down the bomber, Carlin gets an idea in his head: could they use the device to actually travel back in time and not only prevent the bombing but also the murder of a local woman whose truck was used in the bombing?

Paula plays Claire, a love interest of Denzel Washington's, she is the female lead. The first Tony Scott film to be rated PG-13 since Days of Thunder in 1990. Although the film secured a PG-13 rating for its domestic theatrical release, Scott always intended to release an R-rated version on DVD at a later date. The movie went through pre-production in New Orleans. Just weeks before production was to begin, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. With the location in ruins, the movie made the decision to find a new location to shoot. Weeks after the decision, canceling the movie altogether was in talks. Finally, three months after the hurricane, the film returned to New Orleans, Louisiana and began pre-production once again. The original setting for the film was Long Island before Tony Scott changed it to New Orleans.
